Sleep Disorders

What it is a Sleep Disorder

A sleep disorder is a physical or emotional challenge that can affect the quality, timings, or amount of sleep you get. Given the high importance of sleep for everyday health and longevity, it is important to find a solution.

It is common for sleep disorders to occur alongside and exacerbate medical or mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

The importance of sleep cannot be understated. Sleep is necessary to help with optimal brain function; inadequate sleep can result in fatigue, decreased energy and irritability.

Sleep disorders that Medicinal Cannabis may help support

There are several categories of sleep disorders including; Insomnia, Sleep apnea, and Narcolepsy. The most common of which is Insomnia.

Insomnia is defined as ongoing or persistent problems falling and staying asleep.

In almost all cases, Insomnia is related to poor sleeping habits, mental health challenges, certain medications, or chronic illness.
What are the signs and symptoms of Insomnia?
If you are having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep at night, you may be suffering from Insomnia. Symptoms of which may include:
* Difficulty falling asleep at night.
* Constantly waking up during the night.
* Tiredness or sleepiness throughout your day/
* A feeling of Irritability, depression or anxiety.
* Difficulty paying attention, focusing on tasks or remembering.
Can Medicinal Cannabis support better sleep?
Medicinal Cannabis holds promise as an alternative or adjunctive therapy for managing the causes of the likes of Insomnia. Medicinal Cannabis treatments and CBD oil can help promote relaxation while providing less reported side effects such as nausea and drowsiness compared to some prescribed pharmaceutical alternatives.
How common is Insomnia?
Approximately one-quarter of adults in New Zealand may suffer from a chronic sleep problem, highlighting insomnia as a major public health issue in New Zealand.

Medicinal Cannabis may be able to help.

While we continue to learn about the effects of Medicinal Cannabis and sleep, our doctors all agree that Sleep is one of, if not the most important aspects of your health.

If getting to, or staying asleep is an issue, CBD Oil contains a cannabinoid called cannabidiol which is known to encourage relaxation in individuals by interacting with endocannabinoid system receptors (C1 and C2).

Similarly, the cannabinoid THC is well known for its sedative effect and the limited research points to its effect on sleep cycles, primarily increasing deep sleep in individuals.
