Name & Professional Title:
Dr Nicky Baillie, Integrative GP
How long have you been practicing medicine?
Over 30 years.
What inspired you to specialize in medicinal cannabis?
I developed an interest in holistic approaches early in my medical career, especially the ancient tradition of herbal medicine. I went on to complete a Diploma in Herbal Medicine and over the years have gathered lots of experience supporting patients with herbal and nutritional approaches. When a colleague encouraged me to start working in the area of medicinal cannabis it felt like a natural extension of my passion for plant medicines. I have loved learning about medicinal cannabis and the benefits it can offer.
What is your approach to patient care?
I see the patient (you) in the centre, and myself as part of your team, walking alongside you as you navigate health challenges and treatment options, or work towards changes needed for optimal health. Making the best decisions for your health is important and can sometimes be daunting. My aim is to support and guide you as you seek the best path forward for yourself.
What do you find most rewarding about working with medicinal cannabis?
The feedback from my patients, many of whom find medicinal cannabis incredibly helpful.
What are your areas of expertise or special interests within the field?
I have a special interest in women’s health, mental health, sleep issues, chronic pain and supporting people living with cancer.
How do you stay updated with the latest advancements in medicinal cannabis?
There is a huge amount of research being undertaken in the area of medicinal cannabis. I listen to webinars given by experts, and read relevant research reviews shared by colleagues. As a team we also have regular medical education sessions at Cannaplus.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Gardening keeps me very busy, especially growing herbs and vegetables. I also love playing tennis, swimming in the ocean, and playing ukelele with friends.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to patients considering medicinal cannabis treatment?
Seek out a health professional specialising in this area who can give you all the information you need to make a decision regarding this treatment.
What’s something unique about you that patients might find interesting?
In my final year at medical school I chose to do my elective on Niue Island. I lived and worked on Niue Island for 3 months in the local hospital. Every week we did an “Island Round” in an old white van. Anybody who needed medical help hung a red flag our their window. It was an eye-opener to work in a small community with very limited medical resources.
What would you say to patients who are new to the clinic and medicinal cannabis?
Don’t hesitate to ask questions. We have a team of people here who can help you.
How do you collaborate with other healthcare professionals at Cannaplus (such as pharmacists, nurses, etc.) to ensure holistic patient care?
One thing I really enjoy about Cannaplus is the close connection I have with my colleagues. We are in frequent contact online or in person, asking questions, sharing experiences and getting advice.
What conditions or symptoms do you frequently treat with medicinal cannabis?
Chronic pain, sleep issues, anxiety, women’s health issues.
