Meeting your CannaPlus team: Dr Nigel Ford

A quick introduction to yourself?

I’m Dr. Nigel Ford (MB BCh), I’ve been a doctor for over 30 years first in the UK and then here in NZ. For the last 20 I have been an internal medicine and acute medicine physician.

I joined the CannaPlus+ team in August 2024.

What inspired you to specialise in medicinal cannabis?

After breaking my neck, I was left with chronic pain issues. Knowing the potential risks, I did not wish to be on strong pain relievers long term.
So I did extensive research of the alternatives, and I happened upon some herbal supplements that helped. This led to a long-term interest in Natraceuticals.

I wanted to bring a scientific approach to their use and finding which were effective. So I continued my research, even working as the medical advisor for a nutrition company for several years.
In my research it was clear that cannabis was an effective and safe medication and I wanted to learn more about its use and benefits. So I decided to immerse myself in the field.

What is your approach to patient care?

I find it important to hear from my patients what is most important to them then provide them with the information needed so that we can work together to find an effective treatment regimen

What do you find most rewarding about working with medicinal cannabis?

Finding solutions for people that have exhausted their options for treatment elsewhere and hearing how it changes their lives.

What are your areas of expertise or special interests within the field?

My background in general or internal medicine gives me a broad range of experience. However, I am particularly interested in Sleep Disorders, Pain Management and solutions for the management of Arthritis.

How do you stay updated with the latest advancements in medicinal cannabis?

The great thing is, that after years of stagnation due to the stigma of illegality there is an explosion of new research interest in Medicinal Cannabis.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

I have a young son who is incredibly active. So, I’m usually pretty busy going mountain biking, swimming or being coaxed to bounce on the trampoline 😊

What is one piece of advice you’d give to patients considering medicinal cannabis treatment?

I frequently meet patients who have put off consultations for a long time because of the historical stigma of cannabis, and wish that they had made enquiries years ago.

My job is to give you the advice, so that we can see if this is the right treatment for you.

What’s something unique about you that patients might find interesting?

I used to be a competitive martial artist, and held three national titles from different countries.

What would you say to patients who are new to the clinic and medicinal cannabis?

You are welcome here. How can we help you? We will work together to find the right treatment for you.

How do you collaborate with other healthcare professionals at Cannaplus (such as pharmacists, nurses, etc.) to ensure holistic patient care?

It is wonderful that we have an incredible team here, with a broad range of expertise. We constantly collaborate, ask advice of each other and share knowledge so that we can reach the best patient outcome.

What conditions or symptoms do you frequently treat with medicinal cannabis?

I regularly see patients with problems with Sleep, Arthritis, Chronic Pain, Anxiety, Arthritis, ADHD, and Inflammation.

Can you share a memorable or humorous moment you’ve experienced with a patient during a consultation?

I love the wicked glee several 80+ yr ladies have when sharing with their family that they now use medicinal cannabis 😉
