What’s your name and professional qualifications?
Dr. Willem van der Merwe
MBChB UOFS (RSA) 1994, RNZCUC (NZ) 2001
How long have you been practising medicine?
I’ve been practising for 30 years!
What inspired you to specialise in medicinal cannabis?
As an Emergency and Urgent Care Physician for over 20 years, I’ve treated acute pain, chronic pain, and mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and suicidality. Traditional treatments often relied on opiates, which come with significant side effects and dependency risks. My search for safer alternatives led me to medicinal cannabis, which provides effective pain relief with a lower risk of harm than opiates or benzodiazepines.
What is your approach to patient care?
I focus on a patient-centred, holistic approach. I aim to build a relaxed, trusting relationship with my patients, fostering mutual respect and education. Many patients have been self-medicating for years, so I prioritise harm reduction and destigmatisation.
What do you find most rewarding about working with medicinal cannabis?
Hearing patients share their success stories is immensely rewarding. From reducing opioid dependency to improving overall well-being, the positive impact medicinal cannabis has on my patients’ lives is a constant source of motivation.
What are your areas of expertise or special interests within the field?
I work with patients of all ages, but I particularly enjoy treating older adults. I also specialise in addiction management, harm reduction, and integrating medicinal cannabis with traditional pharmaceuticals or as an alternative to unhealthy substance use.
How do you stay updated with the latest advancements in medicinal cannabis?
Cannabinoid medicine is a relatively new field, with limited research and formal education. Staying informed requires daily study, reviewing emerging literature, and learning from practical experience in the clinic.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I enjoy skiing in Canada, boating along New Zealand’s beautiful coastline, and playing squash 3–4 times a week with friends and my partner.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to patients considering medicinal cannabis treatment?
Medicinal cannabis is a safe, effective, and holistic treatment option. There’s no harm in trying it to see if it suits your needs. Be open to experimenting with different products and be patient as we tailor the treatment to your unique physiology.
What’s something unique about you that patients might find interesting?
I’ve had my Ford SUV for 24 years—it’s my longest relationship!
What would you say to patients who are new to the clinic and medicinal cannabis?
Be open and honest about your reasons for seeking advice. Medicinal cannabis might not work for everyone, but we’ll guide you in finding the right product or let you know if it’s not the best option for you.
How do you collaborate with other healthcare professionals at CannaPlus+?
We work closely as a team, communicating via a shared platform to discuss patient needs, treatment options, and new research. Regular CME (Continuing Medical Education) sessions ensure we stay aligned.
What conditions or symptoms do you frequently treat with medicinal cannabis?
I often treat pain, sleep issues, mood disorders, and inflammation. My focus is on harm reduction, addressing the physical, financial, and social impacts of high-volume substance use.
Can you share a memorable or humorous moment you’ve experienced with a patient?
Every consultation is unique, filled with banter, laughter, and sometimes tears. I enjoy hearing about my patients’ lives and being part of their wellness journey.
